The question I get asked the most is, "how do you find the best martial arts for children." Sounds like an easy question, yet many parents are confused when selecting a program.
If you live in a city or large town chances are you have many different schools and programs to choose from. Look in your phone book and you'll find several ads placed. Plus, there are many schools that just don't advertise.
I always tell parents ask around. Discuss with other parents who have had children go through schools their opinions. Likes and dislikes. Narrow your list down and then go observe a class. Almost all schools will let you come in with kids and watch a class in session.
Martial arts schools boil down to two classes. Traditional vs. non-traditional. Traditional schools are structured by discipline, attendance, and respect. They call instuctors sir and always honor those who have higher belt ranks. Traditional schools teach not only techniques but also the history of the martial art. Traditional schools test usually 4 times a year and test for belts and ranks are usually done by either grand master of school or other instructors not associated with that particular program. Same martial art just different school.
Non-traditional schools focus on achieving a belt. Many schools have varying colors of belts. White, yellow, green, purple, gold, ect. Traditional schools usually have basic belt ranks. White, yellow, green, red, brown, black. With ranks within the color of belt.
Non-traditional schools use a variety of different martial arts in their classes. Many schools within the non- traditional frame are called American Karate schools. Most of the American schools focus on fighting techniques where traditional schools focus on forms, (kata's) and lifestyle of individuals. Traditional school makes sure you are in good mental and physical condition to meet the demands of fighting. It emphasizes your limitations and how to avoid confrontations vs. thinking you can kick everyone's butt like you see on TV.
Best advice I can give is ask around and go observe classes. Talk to the instuctors and get a feel of their attitudes. Look at student to instructor ratios. All will help in your choosing a school right for you and your children.
